  In addition to requiring a reasonable combination of high strength and toughness of the substrate, the surface performance of the embossing machine mold is crucial for the working performance and service life of the mold. These surface properties refer to: wear resistance, corrosion resistance, friction coefficient, fatigue performance, etc. The improvement of these properties solely relying on the improvement and enhancement of the matrix material is very limited and uneconomical. However, surface treatment technology often achieves twice the result with half the effort, which is also the reason for the rapid development of surface treatment technology.

  Embossing machine surface treatment technology is a systematic engineering process that changes the morphology, chemical composition, microstructure, and stress state of the mold surface through surface coating, surface modification, or composite treatment techniques, in order to achieve the required surface performance. From the perspective of surface treatment methods, they can be further divided into chemical methods, physical methods, physicochemical methods, and mechanical methods. Although new treatment technologies aimed at improving the surface performance of molds continue to emerge, the main applications in mold manufacturing are nitriding, carburizing, and deposition of hardened films. The nitriding process includes gas nitriding, ion nitriding, liquid nitriding, and other methods. In each nitriding method, there are several nitriding techniques that can adapt to the requirements of different steel grades and workpieces. Because nitriding technology can form surfaces with excellent performance, and the nitriding process has good coordination with the quenching process of mold steel. At the same time, the nitriding temperature is low, and there is no need for white heat cooling after nitriding, resulting in small deformation of the mold. Therefore, nitriding technology was used earlier and is widely used for surface strengthening of molds.

  The goal of mold carburization is mainly to improve the overall strength and toughness of the mold, that is, the working surface of the mold has high strength and wear resistance. The introduced technical idea is to use lower grade materials, that is, to replace other materials through carburization and quenching, thereby reducing manufacturing costs. The most mature technology for hardening film deposition is CVD. In order to increase the bonding strength of the surface of the film layer workpiece, various enhanced PVD technologies have been developed.
